About Washington Heights
Washington Heights is one of the official neighborhood area communities in Chicago, Illinois. A couple communities near Washington Heights are Princeton Park and Auburn Gresham. Washington Heights is on Chicago's far south side. The area used to be the home of German and Irish immigrants, but the population grew and changed tremendously after World War II. In the 1970s, African Americans were the majority cultural group in the area, and they still make Washington Heights their home today. The community is near to Interstates 57, 90 and 94, which gives easy access to the entire Chicago metropolis. Attractions include Chicago State University, Chicago Midway Airport, and St. Xavier University.
Robichaux Park
This fully equipped city park has tennis and basketball courts, a playground, an athletic field and walking trails. The park honors Joseph J. Robichaux, the first African American who owned an ice cream-making business, the Baldwin Ice Cream Company.
Court Theatre
This professional theatre is located on the campus of the University of Chicago in the Hyde Park neighborhood, providing the surrounding communities with a venue for classic plays. The theatre also features musicals and African American plays. Contemporary artists interpret modern and historic dramatic plays with a fresh and innovative style.
The Children's Museum in Oak Lawn
This interactive museum is a great learning place for children and is filled with activities. The museum format lets children explore and play. Main exhibits include a theatre where children can perform, a musical tree where children can play musical instruments and more.
